Description: keletal muscles contain three types of receptors that are important for motor control in general and for spinal reflexes in particular. The muscle spindle is a complex, encapsulated receptor found in the body of the muscle. Muscle spindles are activated by lengthening (stretching) the muscle and are therefore called stretch receptors. Another type of receptor is the Golgi Tendon Organ (GTO), an encapsulated ending in the musculotendinous junction of the muscle. Golgi tendon organs are tension receptors and respond best to tension generated by active muscle contraction.
